Car door dent repair cost
Updated 2026-10-06 · By the Car Repair Estimator team
Car door dent repair typically costs about $75-$500 for a small ding fixed with paintless dent repair, and about $200-$2,500 for a larger dent that needs body filler and paint. Creases, door edges and aluminum doors push the price up, and a door that is too damaged is replaced for about $500-$2,500.
Car door dent repair costs by dent size
Doors are one of the most common places for dents: parking-lot dings, shopping carts and the car next to you. The price depends mostly on two questions: is the paint still intact, and how big and sharp is the dent? If the paint is intact, a technician can often massage the metal back from behind with paintless dent repair (PDR). If the paint is cracked, chipped or the metal is badly creased, the door needs body filler, sanding and a repaint, which costs more. For the technique itself see paintless dent repair cost; this page focuses on doors.
| Repair type | Typical cost range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small ding, about 1 inch or less (PDR) | $75-$500 | Two PDR shops say $75-$150; a collision shop says $150-$500; Jerry puts a small dent at about $125 |
| Medium dent, 2-4 inches (PDR) | $150-$400 | Patriot PDR $150-$300; Carlson PDR $150-$400 |
| Large panel dent (PDR) | $300-$600 | Paint must be intact; Patriot PDR |
| Deep crease dent | $400-$1,200 | Carlson PDR's door pricing |
| Medium dent, conventional repair with paint | $200-$1,000 | Carlson PDR $200-$500; Harry's Collision $500-$1,000 for 1-3 inch dents with paint damage |
| Large dent with paint damage | $500-$2,500 | Harry's Collision puts dents over 3 inches at $1,000 or more |
| Aluminum door | Add 10-20% | Aluminum is harder to work than steel (Patriot PDR) |
| Door replacement | $500-$2,500 | Most vehicles; see car door replacement cost |
| DIY dent puller or touch-up kit | From about $4 to $70 | Only for shallow dents with intact paint (Jerry) |
Ranges come from two PDR shops, a collision shop and Jerry's consumer guide. Sources disagree most on small dents: Patriot PDR and Carlson PDR quote $75-$150 for a small door ding, while Harry's Collision puts dents of an inch or less at $150-$500 and Jerry gives about $125. Jerry's overall range for dent repair is $50 to $2,500. Most of these publishers sell dent repair, so use the table to judge a quote, not to set one.
PDR vs conventional body shop repair on a door
PDR works on dents in sheet metal where the paint is intact, and it avoids filler and repainting. Patriot PDR estimates small door dings at 30-60 minutes and most 2-4 inch dents at 60-90 minutes, while large panel dents take 2-5 hours. It lists collision or structural dents, plastic parts and paint damage as things PDR may not fix. Conventional repair covers those cases: the shop pulls the metal as far as it will go, fills, sands, primes and paints the door, and often blends into the neighboring panel for a color match. See cost to repaint a car for what paint adds.
What drives the cost of a door dent repair
Size and depth
The width of the dent matters, but depth and sharpness matter more. A shallow, round dent is easy to push out; a sharp crease stretches the metal and takes far longer. Carlson PDR's door prices show it: $75-$150 for a small ding, $150-$400 for a medium dent and $400-$1,200 for a deep crease.
Location on the door
Patriot PDR notes that dents near edges or body lines are harder to reach and reshape. Door edges and the character line along the side are typical examples, and they cost more than a dent in the middle of the panel.
Access
The technician needs to reach the back of the dent. Patriot PDR lists removing trim, tail lights or interior panels as extra labor; on a door, reaching the back of the dent can mean taking off the interior door panel.
Metal and vehicle
Aluminum doors add about 10-20 percent according to Patriot PDR. Luxury cars and vehicles with thicker metal also cost more.
Number of dents and paint damage
Several dings on one door add up, and a scratch through the paint changes the job from PDR to refinishing; see car scratch repair cost. Rust around a dent is its own repair: Harry's Collision puts minor surface rust at $50 and major work at $2,000 or more (more on rust repair cost).
Region and shop
Prices vary by region and shop. Jerry lists size, location, depth, geographic area and vehicle make and model as the main factors.
Repair or replace the door?
Repair is usually the right call for dents that leave the metal intact, even if the paint has to be redone. Replacement comes up when the door skin or frame is badly crushed, creased in several places or damaged in a collision. Harry's Collision puts door replacement at $500-$2,500 for most vehicles, which overlaps with the top of the conventional repair range. If the quoted repair, paint and blending are close to the replacement price, ask the shop to price both. Hail damage across several panels is a separate case; see hail damage repair cost.
DIY door dent repair
CarParts.com says pulling-style dent kits work on superficial dents that haven't damaged the paint, that medium to large dents are hard to pull, and that a kit won't work well if the paint is chipped, cracked or split. Jerry puts DIY tools from about $4 and touch-up kits as high as $70. If the dent is on a door edge or a crease, get a PDR shop's quote before you try it yourself.
Is it worth using insurance?
Jerry says it's usually not worth making a claim for dent repair unless the dent is major, and recommends saving claims for damage that exceeds your deductible. Many door dings cost less than a typical deductible, while a creased door, damage across several panels, or a door that needs replacement can approach it. If another driver caused the damage, ask about their insurance. Compare an itemized estimate to your deductible first.
How to get an accurate door dent estimate
Photograph the dent from straight on and from an angle so the depth shows, and look closely at the paint along its edges for cracks. Note whether the dent touches the door edge or a body line. With Car Repair Estimator Repair+ you can snap the damage and scan the VIN so the estimate matches your vehicle, then get an itemized estimate with repair, refinish and any replacement-part lines listed separately. Then get quotes from a PDR specialist and a body shop, and ask each one whether the price includes paint, blending and removing the interior door panel. The app's estimate is informational, not a binding quote.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to fix a dent in a car door?
Shops quote about $75-$150 for a small door ding with paintless dent repair, though one collision shop puts dents up to an inch at $150-$500. Medium dents typically run $150-$400 with PDR, and dents that damaged the paint run about $200-$1,000 or more with conventional repair.
Is paintless dent repair cheaper than a body shop for a door?
Usually, when the paint is not cracked or chipped. PDR shops put small and medium door dents at about $75-$400, while conventional repair with filler and paint is quoted at about $200-$2,500, depending on size. PDR works on dents in sheet metal with intact paint and does not fix structural collision damage.
When does a door need to be replaced instead of repaired?
A collision shop puts door replacement at about $500-$2,500 for most vehicles. Replacement comes up when the dent is a structural or collision dent that PDR cannot fix, or when repair labor and paint start to approach the price of a replacement door.
Can I fix a door dent myself?
Small, shallow dents with intact paint can sometimes be pulled with a DIY kit; Jerry says tools start at around $4, and paint touch-up kits run as much as $70. CarParts.com notes that medium to large dents are hard to pull and that kits work poorly when paint is chipped, cracked or split.
