Paint protection film cost
Updated 2026-10-01 · By the Car Repair Estimator team
Paint protection film cost typically runs about $600-$1,500 for a partial front, $1,500-$3,500 for a full front end, $2,500-$4,000 for a track package and about $4,000-$9,000 or more for a full car. The price varies with the vehicle's size and shape, the film, how much paint prep is needed and the installer.
How much paint protection film costs
Paint protection film (PPF), sometimes called a clear bra, is a clear film applied over the paint to guard it against rock chips and small scratches. J.D. Power describes it as mainly thermoplastic polyurethane, nearly invisible and self-healing, and puts the overall price range at $1,000 to over $8,000. Most of the price depends on how much of the car you cover. The table below shows typical professional prices.
| Coverage | Typical cost range | What is usually covered |
|---|---|---|
| Front bumper only | $500-$1,000 | Bumper cover |
| Partial front | $600-$1,500 | Bumper, mirror caps and the leading part of the hood and fenders; some shops include headlights |
| Full front | $1,500-$3,500 | Full hood, front fenders, bumper, mirrors and headlights |
| Track package | $2,500-$4,000 | Full front plus rocker panels, A-pillars, roof edge, lower doors or rear-wheel impact areas |
| Full car | $4,000-$9,000+ | Every painted exterior panel |
| Partial PPF plus ceramic coating | Under $2,500 on average | Front-end film, with the rest of the car coated |
| Paint correction before install | $300-$1,000+ | Polishing out swirls and light scratches |
Ranges are compiled from J.D. Power, Kelley Blue Book, Family Handyman and two installers' 2026 price guides, from Maryland and Florida. The sources agree on the order of costs but not on exact edges. For a full front, Family Handyman gives $2,000-$2,500, the Maryland shop $1,800-$3,000 and the Florida shop $1,500-$3,500. For a full car, Kelley Blue Book says about $4,000-$7,000, while the two shops quote $5,000-$8,000 or more and $5,500-$9,000 or more. Prices vary by region and shop.
What drives the price
- Vehicle size and shape. Bigger vehicles need more film. The Florida shop's ranges run from $1,500-$5,000 for a sedan to $2,000-$6,500 for an SUV or truck and $4,000-$8,000 or more for luxury and exotic cars. Family Handyman notes that the price also depends on a vehicle's uniqueness, age and paint condition.
- Film brand and grade. Premium films from major makers carry long warranties and self-healing top coats. The Maryland shop notes that ceramic-infused films cost more than standard ones.
- Pre-cut kit or custom bulk install. A pre-cut kit is cut to fit your model, needs no disassembly and is generally cheaper. Its edges may stop up to about 1/8 inch short of the panel edge. A custom install uses bulk film that is trimmed by hand and wrapped around panel edges. The installer may remove bumpers, headlights or cameras, so it takes longer and generally costs more, but the edges look seamless.
- Paint condition and prep. Family Handyman says a quality shop will decontaminate the paint and remove trim and emblems before applying film. Older or damaged paint may need extra cleaning and minor paint correction, which adds to the cost. J.D. Power puts paint correction at $300 to over $1,000, depending on how bad the defects are.
- Installer. Experienced installers typically charge more, but their work is less likely to need redoing. Film warranties usually depend on a professional install, so ask whether the shop is authorized by the film maker.
Warranty and how long PPF lasts
XPEL says PPF typically lasts 5 to 10 years, depending on the film, the installation and the environment. J.D. Power says up to 10 years. Film makers back their premium lines with limited warranties:
- XPEL Ultimate Plus and Stealth: 10 years from installation against yellowing, cracking, blistering and delaminating. Professional installation is required. The warranty excludes damage from rocks or road debris and covers the film, not the paint underneath.
- 3M Protection Wrap Film: 3M's 2024 warranty gives 10 years of coverage against yellowing, bubbling and cracking. It excludes dents from rocks or road debris and paint pulled off when the film is removed, and it is not transferable.
- SunTek PPF Ultra: a 10-year limited warranty against cracking, bubbling or yellowing when sold and installed by a professional.
These warranties cover defects in the film, not chips or dents from impacts. Keep the invoice and warranty card, since makers may require them for a claim. Ask which product line the quote is for, since warranty terms are set per product.
PPF vs ceramic coating vs wrap
Ceramic coating is a liquid coating that forms a hard shell over the paint. It repels water and dirt, but J.D. Power notes it will not protect paint against stone chips. J.D. Power puts a professional application at $1,000-$3,000 or more. You don't have to choose: PPF can go on first, with ceramic coating applied over it.
A vinyl wrap is mainly for changing a car's color. Kelley Blue Book puts a full wrap at about $2,000-$10,000 or more and expects 5-7 years of use. If the goal is only to protect the paint, Kelley Blue Book recommends ceramic coating, PPF or a combination of partial PPF and ceramic coating. See car wrap cost for wrap prices.
Removing paint protection film
XPEL says removing PPF will not harm the paint when done correctly. Paint can still come up with the film in some cases, though, and 3M's warranty does not cover paint pulled off during removal. Have a professional remove old film, and get the removal priced in the quote if you are replacing yellowed or damaged PPF. Removal is labor, so its cost varies with how much film there is and how hard it is to get off.
What PPF doesn't do
PPF protects good paint. It doesn't fix bad paint. XPEL says the film can hide or reduce the look of light surface scratches, but chips and scratches that go through the clear coat stay visible under the film. Installers recommend repairing existing chips first so the defects aren't trapped under the film. The film also has limits: a large rock can still leave a small dent, and film warranties exclude impact damage.
So fix the damage before booking the film. Scratches through the clear coat need touch-up or refinishing, see car scratch repair cost. A cracked or gouged front bumper, which every front package covers, needs repair or refinishing first, see bumper repair cost. If several panels are worn, compare the price with a repaint. Ask the paint shop and the installer how long new paint must cure before film goes on.
Photograph each damaged panel in daylight. With Car Repair Estimator Repair+ you can snap the damage and get an itemized estimate with parts, body labor and refinish hours listed separately, so you know what the repair adds before the film goes on. Then get quotes from 2-3 PPF installers and ask which film, which coverage and which warranty each quote includes. The app's estimate is informational, not a binding quote.
Frequently asked questions
How much does paint protection film cost?
Most professional PPF jobs cost about $600-$1,500 for a partial front, $1,500-$3,500 for a full front end and $4,000-$9,000 or more for a full car. J.D. Power puts the overall range at $1,000 to over $8,000.
Is PPF better than ceramic coating?
They do different jobs. J.D. Power notes that ceramic coating will not protect paint against stone chips, while PPF is designed to stop rock chips and small scratches. Many owners combine them: Kelley Blue Book says a partial or front-end PPF with ceramic coating can average under $2,500.
How long does paint protection film last?
XPEL says PPF typically lasts 5 to 10 years, depending on the film, the installation and the environment, and J.D. Power says up to 10 years. Premium films from XPEL, 3M and SunTek carry 10-year limited warranties against defects such as yellowing, cracking and bubbling.
Can PPF be put over rock chips or scratches?
The film can make light surface scratches less visible, but it does not repair chips or deep scratches. Installers recommend repairing existing chips first so imperfections are not trapped under the film, which can add paint correction or touch-up costs to the job.
