Windshield chip repair cost
Updated 2026-10-01 · By the Car Repair Estimator team
Windshield chip repair cost is typically $60-$100 for a small chip at a professional shop, according to AAA, and crack repair runs about $100-$150. With comprehensive coverage, many insurers waive the deductible for repairs, so a chip fix often costs you nothing. A full windshield replacement typically costs $250-$1,500 or more, plus camera recalibration on cars with driver-assistance systems.
How much windshield chip repair costs
A chip repair fills the impact point with resin so it stops spreading and becomes less visible. It is far cheaper than a new windshield, which is why glass shops and insurers push you to fix a chip early. The table below shows typical prices from AAA and other sources.
| Service | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DIY chip repair kit | About $16 | Family Handyman lists the Permatex kit at $15.99; best for small, fresh chips |
| Small chip repair at a shop | $60-$100 | AAA; usually 30 minutes or less |
| Chip or small crack repair, overall range | $50-$150 | Depends on size, type and number of chips |
| Crack repair | $100-$150 | Only short cracks qualify |
| Chip repair with comprehensive coverage | Often $0 | Many insurers waive the deductible for repairs |
| Full windshield replacement | $250-$1,500+ | Luxury and rare vehicles cost more |
| Replacement labor alone | $100-$300 | Varies by state |
| ADAS camera recalibration | About $360 typical | On cars with driver-assistance cameras |
Repair and replacement ranges come from AAA, which notes that prices vary by state and city and recommends getting quotes from several shops. The kit price is a single retail listing, and kit prices change from store to store.
Chip vs crack: can it be repaired?
Size, location and age decide whether glass can be repaired. Shops use similar but not identical rules:
- Chips smaller than a quarter. Safelite says a chip smaller than a quarter with no radiating cracks is almost always repairable, especially if it is outside the driver's direct line of sight. GEICO and AAA use the same quarter rule.
- Short cracks. Safelite repairs cracks shorter than six inches, and GEICO says cracks must be smaller than a dollar bill. AAA is stricter: deep cracks longer than three inches often require a full replacement, and starburst cracks are typically repairable only under 3 inches.
- Location. AAA says cracks near the edges or in the ADAS camera zone typically require replacement. Safelite says damage in the driver's line of sight needs attention right away, whatever its size.
- Several chips or spreading damage. Several chips or cracks that spread across the glass and block your view usually mean a new windshield.
- Older glass. AAA notes that on a windshield more than 5 years old, repairs may not hold as well.
A repair won't make the chip disappear. Safelite says a slight blemish at the impact point is normal, though the damage should look better than before.
Why you should fix a chip quickly
Safelite warns that a chip that is clearly repairable right after impact can become unrepairable within days if temperature changes, road vibration or moisture make it spread. Until it is fixed, don't blast the defroster or air conditioning straight at the chip, because sudden temperature changes can make the crack grow. AAA puts the gap plainly: a small chip repair is usually $60-$100, while replacing the windshield costs $250 or more. GEICO adds that a replacement breaks the original factory seal, which can make the area around the glass more prone to leaks.
DIY kit vs professional repair
A DIY resin kit costs a fraction of a shop repair and can work on a small, recent chip. Family Handyman says most kits can deal with damage that is small and recent, but warns that applying the resin badly can leave the glass blurry or distorted, or make it crack further, and then you need a new windshield. Before buying a kit, check your policy: if your insurer covers chip repair with no deductible, a professional repair may cost you less than the kit.
Does insurance cover windshield chip repair?
Damage from a flying rock or debris falls under comprehensive coverage, not liability. Many insurers waive the deductible when the glass can be repaired instead of replaced:
- GEICO says that with comprehensive coverage it waives the deductible for damage that can be repaired.
- Progressive says that if your windshield can be repaired and all coverage requirements are met, you won't pay a deductible, in all 50 states.
- Triple-I notes that some auto policies include no-deductible glass coverage, and that you can buy supplemental glass coverage.
Replacement is different. Safelite says that with comprehensive coverage you are responsible for your deductible and the insurer covers the rest. Progressive and AAA both say Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina don't allow insurers to apply a deductible to a covered windshield replacement claim. Rules and policy terms vary by state and insurer, so read your policy or call your agent. Triple-I lists hail and falling rocks among the hazards comprehensive covers; if a storm also dented the panels, see hail damage repair cost.
Both GEICO and AAA warn about contractors who approach drivers at gas stations or car washes and ask them to sign an assignment of benefits form. Contact your insurer yourself and choose the shop.
Windshield replacement and ADAS calibration
Many newer cars have a camera behind the windshield for automatic emergency braking, lane keeping and similar features. After a new windshield goes in, that camera often has to be recalibrated so the system sees the road correctly. AAA puts the typical recalibration cost at $360, and its 2023 study of three 2023 models found that ADAS work averaged $360, or 25.4%, of the windshield replacement bill. AAA also says OEM or OEM-equivalent glass is especially important on these cars because the cameras need precise optical clarity. Safelite offers two methods: static calibration with a target mounted in front of the car, and dynamic calibration on a test drive at a set speed. Driver-assistance sensors also sit in bumpers and mirrors, see side mirror replacement cost.
How long it takes
- Chip repair: 30 minutes or less in many cases, according to Safelite; GEICO says about 30 minutes. You can drive away immediately.
- Replacement: often 60 minutes or less. Safelite recommends waiting at least one hour before driving so the adhesive can set.
- Recalibration: Safelite says it typically takes an hour or more, depending on the make and model.
Getting an estimate
Photograph the chip next to a coin for scale, and note whether it sits in your line of sight or near the camera behind the mirror. If the same rock strike or storm also left dents or chipped paint, you can snap that damage with Car Repair Estimator Repair+ to get an itemized estimate with parts, body labor and refinish hours listed separately. Then call your insurer about the glass and get quotes from 2-3 shops for the rest. The app's estimate is informational, not a binding quote.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to fix a chip in a windshield?
AAA puts small chip repair at about $60-$100 and repair of chips or small cracks in general at $50-$150. A DIY resin kit costs much less; Family Handyman lists one popular kit at $15.99. If you carry comprehensive coverage, your insurer may cover a professional repair with no deductible.

How big can a windshield chip be and still be repaired?
Safelite and GEICO both say chips smaller than a quarter are usually repairable. Safelite repairs cracks shorter than six inches, and GEICO says cracks must be smaller than a dollar bill. AAA is more conservative on cracks: deep cracks longer than three inches often need a new windshield.
How long does windshield chip repair take?
Usually about 30 minutes or less, according to Safelite and GEICO, and you can drive right away. A replacement often takes about an hour, Safelite recommends waiting at least one hour before driving, and camera recalibration can add an hour or more.
