Fender repair cost

Updated 2026-09-29 · By the Car Repair Estimator team

Fender repair typically costs about $150-$500 for paintless removal of a shallow dent and $500-$1,000 for a dent that needs refinishing, while replacing a front fender usually runs about $800-$1,900 with paint and blending. Quarter panels cost more: repairs range up to about $3,000, and full replacement is often $3,000-$6,000.

Fender and quarter panel repair costs

"Fender" usually means the front fender, the panel over each front wheel between the bumper and the door. On most cars it's bolted on, so replacing it is fairly simple. The rear equivalent, the quarter panel, is welded into the body structure, so repairing or replacing it is a much bigger job. That difference explains most of the price gap below.

Fender ranges are from a 2026 collision shop guide and include refinishing and blending; OEM parts, aluminum panels and premium vehicles sit above them. Jerry's guide puts a standard front fender replacement at $1,000 or more, and over $5,000 for major damage on large vehicles. Quarter panel figures come from CarParts.com, Jerry and Engineer Fix, which don't fully agree on the upper end.

What drives fender repair cost

Bolted vs welded

Because a front fender bolts on, a shop can often unbolt the damaged one and hang a new one without cutting metal. That's why a deep crease that would take many hours to reshape is often cheaper to replace. A quarter panel has to be cut out along seams, with spot welds drilled out, and the new panel welded or bonded in, then sealed, corrosion-protected and refinished. One guide estimates 15 to 30 labor hours for a full quarter panel replacement, or about $1,500-$4,500 in labor alone at typical body shop rates.

Damage type and location

A shallow dent in the middle of a fender is a good fit for paintless dent repair. Sharp creases, stretched metal, damage along the wheel arch or mounting flange, and rust-through usually point to replacement.

Material

Aluminum fenders and quarter panels, common on some trucks and luxury cars, cost more to repair and replace than steel.

Paint and blending

A new fender arrives in primer. It has to be painted and usually blended into the hood and front door so the color matches. Metallic, pearl and tri-coat colors take longer. See cost to repaint a car.

Hidden damage

A hit hard enough to damage a fender can also crack the bumper cover, break the headlight, bend the fender liner and brackets, or damage sensors in the front corner. A rear corner hit can also affect the rear bumper, taillight and trunk alignment.

OEM vs aftermarket parts

OEM fenders fit best and cost the most. Aftermarket fenders are cheaper but can need extra fitting. For quarter panels, one guide notes that a new OEM panel for a premium vehicle can cost $3,000 or more for the part alone.

Labor rates

Jerry puts typical US body shop labor at about $75-$150 an hour, with big-city shops at the top of that range.

Repair vs replace

DIY vs professional

Swapping a bolt-on front fender is manageable for an experienced DIYer if you can source a pre-painted, matching panel and line up the gaps. Quarter panel replacement involves structural welding and should be done by a body shop.

Insurance

Fender and quarter panel damage from a collision is covered under collision coverage, and hail or vandalism under comprehensive, minus your deductible. A minor fender dent often costs less than the deductible; quarter panel replacement almost always costs more.

How to get an accurate fender or quarter panel estimate

Photograph the whole side of the car and close-ups of the damage, and look at the gaps around the hood, door and bumper; uneven gaps can mean bent brackets or structure. With Car Repair Estimator Repair+ you can snap the damage, scan the VIN, and get an itemized estimate with the panel, body labor and refinish hours on separate lines at local rates, so you can see whether repair or replacement is the bigger number. Then get quotes from 2-3 shops and ask whether each one plans to repair or replace, and which neighboring panels they will blend. The app's estimate is informational, not an insurance appraisal or binding quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a fender and a quarter panel?

On most cars, the front fender is a separate panel bolted on between the front bumper and the front door. The rear quarter panel runs from the rear door to the rear bumper and is welded to the body, which makes it much harder and more expensive to replace.

How much does quarter panel repair cost?

Quarter panel repairs typically range from about $100 for minor work to about $3,000. Full replacement is usually about $3,000-$6,000 on a standard vehicle because it takes an estimated 15 to 30 hours of labor to cut out, weld in and refinish the new panel.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a front fender?

Small dents and scratches are cheaper to repair. Because most front fenders bolt on, a badly creased or torn fender is often cheaper to replace than to spend many hours reshaping.

How long does fender replacement take?

Bolting on a new front fender takes about two hours of labor on many cars. Painting and blending add time, so the car may be at the shop for a day or more.
