Headlight replacement cost

Updated 2026-09-29 · By the Car Repair Estimator team

Headlight replacement typically costs about $70-$400 for a bulb swap and $150-$800 for a full headlight assembly on most cars. LED, adaptive and luxury headlamps often cost $1,000 or more per side, because the whole sealed unit has to be replaced.

Headlight replacement costs: bulb or assembly?

The first question is whether you need a bulb or the whole headlight. A burned-out halogen or HID bulb can be swapped on its own. A cracked lens, broken mounting tabs, moisture inside the housing, or a failed LED module usually means replacing the full assembly, the sealed unit that holds the lens, reflector, light source and often the electronics.

Repair typeTypical cost rangeNotes
Halogen bulb, part onlyAbout $15-$50Single bulbs often around $20
HID (xenon) bulb, part only$100+ eachOften dealer-only on some models
Bulb replacement at a shopAbout $70-$400Depends on how hard the bulb is to reach
Halogen headlight assembly$150-$300Part and labor on common cars
Typical assembly replacement, most cars$150-$800Aftermarket or OEM for mainstream models
HID or LED assembly$500-$1,500+LED units on many newer cars about $600-$2,800
Luxury or adaptive headlights$1,000-$4,000+Some high-end units cost far more
Labor for assembly replacement$100-$300Several hundred more if the bumper must come off
Headlight aiming$60-$80Recommended after a new assembly
Lens restoration kit (cloudy lenses)About $20Only for hazy, uncracked lenses

RepairPal's shop estimates for a bulb replacement show how much the vehicle matters: roughly $66-$86 on a Honda Civic, $128-$170 on a Ford Fusion, $308-$360 on a BMW 328i and $377-$410 on a GMC Acadia, before taxes and fees. Assembly ranges come from 2025-2026 price guides; Kelley Blue Book notes that sealed headlight units on many modern vehicles cost more than $1,000.

What drives headlight replacement cost

Headlight technology

Halogen is the cheapest to replace. HID bulbs cost more and need a ballast. LED headlights last much longer, but many are sealed, so when an LED or its driver fails, the whole assembly is replaced. Adaptive headlights that swivel with steering, and matrix or laser systems, cost the most. Synchrony's 2025 guide cites LED modules for a Toyota Corolla or Subaru Forester at roughly $600-$900 each, and a Volvo XC90 assembly approaching $3,000.

Access

On some cars the bulb twists out from under the hood in minutes. On others the shop has to remove the wheel liner, battery or even the front bumper cover. Kelley Blue Book notes that jobs requiring bumper removal can add several hundred dollars in labor.

OEM vs aftermarket

OEM assemblies from the automaker typically cost 20-50 percent more than aftermarket units, according to one headlight retailer, and another estimates aftermarket housings at 40-60 percent below dealership prices. Aftermarket units can be a good value on older cars; on newer cars with adaptive or matrix lighting, compatibility and certification matter more, so check before buying.

Sensors and calibration

Some headlights work with front cameras for automatic high beams or adaptive lighting, and cars with self-leveling headlights may need an initialization step after replacement. In a front-end collision, radar and cameras behind the grille and bumper are often damaged at the same time; AAA's 2023 research put the average cost of driver-assistance components in a minor front collision at about $1,540.

Bulb, restoration or new assembly?

DIY vs professional

Many halogen bulb swaps are easy DIY jobs with no tools. Assembly replacement is doable on some cars but can require removing the bumper cover, and the new light needs to be aimed so it doesn't blind other drivers. HID systems use high voltage, so follow the manual or let a shop handle them.

Insurance

A headlight broken in a collision is part of the collision claim, and one cracked by road debris may fall under comprehensive, depending on your policy. A bulb that burns out is maintenance and isn't covered. Because LED and adaptive assemblies can cost more than $1,000 each, crash damage to the front corner often makes a claim worthwhile. Check the fender and side mirror after a front-corner hit too.

How to get an accurate headlight estimate

Note whether the headlight is halogen, HID or LED (your owner's manual or the trim level will tell you), and photograph any cracks or moisture. With Car Repair Estimator Repair+ you can snap the damage and scan the VIN so the estimate uses the right headlight for your exact trim, then get an itemized estimate with the part, labor and any related body work listed separately. Then get quotes from 2-3 shops and ask whether each price is for an OEM or aftermarket unit and whether aiming is included. The app's estimate is informational, not a binding quote.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace a headlight bulb?

A halogen bulb itself is often around $20, and RepairPal's estimates for a shop bulb replacement range from roughly $66 on a Honda Civic to about $410 on a GMC Acadia. HID bulbs cost more, often $100 or more each.

Why is my LED headlight so expensive to replace?

Many LED headlights are sealed units with no replaceable bulb, so a failed LED or cracked lens means replacing the whole assembly. On many newer cars those units cost roughly $600-$2,800, and more on luxury models.

Should I replace both headlights at once?

For bulbs, replacing them in pairs keeps the brightness and color matched, since the other bulb is usually near the end of its life too. For a crash-damaged assembly, you usually only need to replace the broken side.

Can I fix cloudy headlights instead of replacing them?

Often, yes. If the lens is only yellowed or hazy and not cracked, a restoration kit costing around $20 or a professional restoration can clear it up for much less than a new assembly.
