What full collision estimating systems do

Insurance collision estimates in the US are written in a small number of dedicated systems. The Database Enhancement Gateway (DEG), a collision industry resource, names the three primary database providers as Audatex (a Solera company), Mitchell International, and CCC Information Services, which uses the MOTOR database. Each system pairs estimating software with a database of parts, part prices and labor times that the DEG says are built from vehicle manufacturer information and used as a guide to establish flat rate times.

These systems are designed for the heavy end of collision work:

• Insurance estimates and supplements in the format insurers and appraisers expect, often exchanged electronically.
• Direct repair program (DRP) work, where the insurer sets the estimating rules and usually the platform.
• Structural and complex repairs, with detailed operations, included and not-included procedures and OEM part numbers for each vehicle.
• Audit trails that insurers review line by line.

If you do insurance work, you need one of them, and nothing on this page suggests otherwise. The DEG also reminds estimators that database times assume new, undamaged parts on new, undamaged vehicles, so experience and judgment still matter on every damaged car.

The work those systems aren't built for

A big part of a body shop's week never touches an insurer:

• A customer walks in with a scuffed bumper and wants to know "how much, roughly" before deciding whether to file a claim.
• A prospect texts two photos of a dented fender and asks for a price.
• A fleet or dealer customer wants quick quotes on several cars.
• A customer brings a quote from another shop and wants a second opinion.
• You're at a car show, a dealership lot or a customer's driveway, away from the office computer.

Opening a full estimating session for each of these is slow, and many never turn into jobs. A photo-to-estimate app is meant for exactly this front end of the funnel.

Ask prospects to send photos and a VIN photo, build the estimate on your phone and reply the same day. The itemized breakdown tells them what they're paying for, which answers questions a single number in a text leaves open.

Second opinions

When a customer brings another shop's quote, a separate itemized estimate shows where the two differ: repair vs replace calls, refinish hours, blend or paint materials.

What to look for in body shop estimating tools

• Separate body and refinish labor at your own rates. One lump labor figure doesn't hold up with customers.
• Blend and paint materials as their own lines.
• VIN decoding, so trim-specific parts are right.
• Customer-facing output: a clean link or PDF with your shop's branding.
• Estimate-to-invoice without retyping.
• Clear limits: the tool should tell you what it is for and what it isn't.
